eSIM for Hajj and Umrah: staying connected in Makkah and Madinah

Updated 31 October 2026

On Hajj or Umrah you'll rely on your phone for the Nusuk app, permits, train tickets, maps and staying in touch with family. A travel eSIM set up at home means you're connected as soon as you land in Jeddah or Madinah.

How much data pilgrims use

Pilgrims use a lot of data. On 25 May 2026, during Hajj, Saudi Arabia's telecom regulator (CST) reported average use of about 1.3 GB per person per day in Makkah and the holy sites.

For a 1–2 week Umrah with maps, messaging and video calls home, 10 GB is a sensible start; for Hajj, or if you share videos often, take 15 GB or more. You can top up the same eSIM at any time.

The Nusuk app

Nusuk handles permits, Haramain train tickets, maps and more. Saudi Arabia lets it work without using data, but only on local Saudi SIMs (stc, Mobily, Zain). On a travel eSIM, Nusuk uses your data like any other app, so download it and sign in before you travel.

Calling home

Messaging apps work normally. Internet calls have been allowed in Saudi Arabia since 2017, but WhatsApp voice and video calls have worked on and off over the years without an official explanation. If one calling app doesn't connect, try another, and keep a regular call on your own number as the backup.

Keep your own SIM switched on for calls and bank codes; our eSIM is data only.

Before you fly

  1. Check your phone supports eSIM: dial *#06# and look for an EID number.
  2. Install the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi. The plan starts when you first connect in Saudi Arabia.
  3. Install Nusuk and your airline's app, and download offline maps of Makkah and Madinah.
  4. Pack a power bank: navigation and video calls drain batteries fast in the heat.
  5. After landing, switch the eSIM on, turn on data roaming for it and choose it for mobile data.

Questions

Which network does the eSIM use in Saudi Arabia?

Mobily, one of the country's three networks, with 4G and 5G in Makkah, Madinah and Jeddah.

Do I need a Saudi SIM for Hajj?

No. A travel eSIM covers your data. A Saudi SIM is only needed if you want a local number or Nusuk's data-free mode.

Can I share data with family members?

Yes, hotspot works on every plan. Remember that sharing uses your data allowance faster.
